Hand horn made snuffbox – one of the most characteristic Kashub products. We would like to recommend snuffboxes first of all collectors, people interested in regional traditions and connoisseurs of unique handicrafts. It is well worth to pay special attention to the aesthetic and precision of accomplishment of every element of the snuffbox and to the wealth of its adornment. Oval amber setted in a fancy silver base, an amber plug and a silver caption "Kaszuby" pose a decoration. The author put small amount of snuff inside in order to emphasize product’s context. Important ! In order to open a snuffbox properly, you should push out a plug placed at its bottom and then lever up the bottom from the side of the nozzle. The plug was not given leeway because of the necessity of preservation of tightness.
Snuff-boxes are the most popular in Kashubia. They are important elements of the Kashubian tradition. Horn snuff-box had a symbolic meaning in the region. It was thought to be a symbol of manhood. Young boys used wooden or clay snuff-boxes. Horn snuff-box was a gift given to men by their fathers when they got married and founded their own families.
Snuff-boxes are made of horn (most often cow horn). They are hand-made. First, to soften the material horns are boiled in water with potato peelings for more than ten hours. Then, the bone core is removed and the material is formed into a snuff-box. Shaped snuff-box is left in a special wooden press or vice for a day to set. The nozzle of a snuff-box is formed by heating over fire. Horn may be easily burnt or can crack, that is why this part of work requires special precision.
Piotr comes from a family in which tradition was extremely important. His adventure with snuff-boxes started in a quite unusual way. When he quit smoking, he started to use snuff. His wife, angry that he was about to replace one bad habit with another, opposed to his buying traditional, expensive Kashubian horn snuff-box. So Piotr decided to make one himself. The beginnings were not easy. Details of snuff-box production are well-guarded secrets of the masters of the art. Piotr started his research of snuff-box production from the Kashubian Museum in Kartuzy. Then, with trial and error method, he learnt to make snuff-boxes himself. The most difficult part was to make the bottom part tight-fitting. Only five people know how to do it perfectly well. It took Piotr a long time to find out, but today his traditional horn snuff-boxes have no equal. They are beautiful and exceptionally tight-fitting. And this way, an idea to make a snuff-box for himself lead Piotr to become an expert in the field. His snuff-boxes may be enjoyed by everybody who, just like their maker, respect tradition and let themselves be fascinated by it.
