Wooden dishes have been commonly used in households for centuries. However, the handicraft art of kitchenware making started to disappear together with the industrial development. Very few workshops manufacturing wooden kitchenware have remained until today (spoons, ladles or bowls). One of the most famous ones is a spoon workshop in the village of Zamczysk (eastern Poland) where our products come from. Spoons, ladles, colanders and bowls are handmade from lime and alder-wood in accordance with the traditional method – the so called carving technique. It consists in taking out wood mass with the use of tools and fire. Carving always takes place along the tree ring. Wood has to be specifically prepared. Trees are cut in winter when frost stops growth of mushrooms that prevent wood diseases. Carving takes place immediately after cutting a tree down. Wood is soft and easily undergoes processing then. Work is done with the use of various types of axes.
Mr Mieczysław runs a spoon-making workshop in a village of Zamczysk. He is said to be a man with a ‘spirit’. Every ordinary piece of wood turns into a beautiful spoon in his hands. He is the last spoon-maker in Zamczysk who uses the old traditional technology of spoon-manufacturing with the use of simple hand tools. He designs some patterns himself, others are inspired by traditional forms. Mr Mieczysław is a simple man who is fascinated with his art. He does not pay attention to competitions and distinctions.
