Small wooden pipe, decorated with chisel engraved motifs, painted and lacquered. This pipe can be used as a musical instrument, toy or decoration. It is hand made in whole in accordance with old manufacture technology. Today, this way of pipe manufacturing disappears because of its time-consumption and labour-intensity. It preserved in the South of Poland, in region priding itself on tradition of wooden folk toys hand manufacturing.

Wooden pipes are made from hazel tree branches, and their mouthpiece from lime wood. Branches must be straight and knag-free so that the pipe does not break in the processing. They are cut into three-centimetre pieces. The next stage is to screw in an outlet hole. Only then are the branches processed on a lathe in ordered to achieve a desired external shape. Next holes are screwed out with a special drill. They must be spaced out at an appropriate distance from each other. A special metal plate with notches is used to measure them. Once the holes are drilled in slightly, they have to be burnt out to render their surface smooth. In the past holes were burnt out with a red hot metal wire. Nowadays a special lid over the drill is used. In order to make the pipe play a special mouthpiece – the so called ‘gabbie’. Then the pipe is cleaned from the inside, to get rid of shavings and dust and it is precisely polished up from the outside with sand paper. Ready made pipes are covered with wood stain, and then with transparent varnish. The most often used colours are red, yellow and blue. Freshly painted pipes get dried on an especially prepared board with nails. They have to be kept in warmth, but they should not be exposed to the sun in order to protect colours from fading away. Finally, a machine is used to make stripes and pipes are ornamented by carved out patterns with a chisel.

Mr Augustyn grew up at home where wooden pipe making was a tradition. His father was making pipes for 60 years, later he opened his own workshop where he was making pipes in accordance with the use of handicraft traditional technique that was passed on to him by his father .
