Wooden figurine of birdies guarding their nest with nestling and egg. It can be placed on a table or chest of drawers as a decoration or it can be hung up on wall. Wooden birdies figurines also were often used as a Christmas tree ornaments. This figurine is hand made in whole, in accordance with traditional technology of manufacture. It is created by folk artists coming from a place famous for wooden birdies manufacturing. This figurine was painted with a vivid imagination and unusual precision. Its intensive colouring attracts attention. Birdie was painted with application of eco-friendly colours and colourless lacquer. Today hand manufacturing of wooden birdies is practiced mainly by older authors, which not always are success at finding young persons willing to continue this tradition. It is well worth to add to collection these original, hand made figurines – before they are forced out by machine manufactured ornaments.
Birds are carved in soft, lime or pine-wood (if it is pine-wood, there has to be its special selected kind, the so called ‘wermutka’). It takes great precision and talent to make such a figurine, however the work itself is simple in technical terms. Ordinary tools suffice, and a sophisticated workshop is not necessary. First a body is carved out with a pen-knife. A shape made in this way must be smoothened with sand paper. Later legs are made with a piece of bent wire which is screwed into wood. The last task is to paint the figurine. This work stage requires special attention in case of birds that represent real species. Their colours and characteristic plumage must be shown relatively realistically. Mrs Ludwika and Mr Władysłąw exclusively use ecological paints for decorating birds..
Mrs Ludwika and Mr Władysław are a married couple from Stryszawa. They have occupied themselves with carving and painting birds since their childhood. They have learnt that art from their father and grandfather. Mrs Ludwika started helping her husband in this activity. They have passed their family tradition on their children and their granddaughter, Paulinka. Mrs Ludwika and Mr Władysłąw are inspired by nature. Woodpeckers, waxwings, tits, storks and cocks can be listed among their figurines. One can find birds of paradise which do not represent a concrete species. Mrs Ludwika and Mr Władysław are members of Folk Artists Association in Lublin.
